The Department of Rural Economics is one of the key departments of Gujarat Vidyapith, started since inception of the esteemed Gandhian institute. Well-known economists like J.C. Kumarappa and Narhari Parikh were pioneers of the department. The department has meticulously designed its courses with an outcome-based model focusing on providing the theoretical and practical know-how required to understand variables affecting the economy in general and the rural sector in particular. The Syllabus is updated from time to time to accommodate dynamic economic scenarios. Moreover, the harmonious inter-community relationships for emotional integration are in the genesis of department's teaching pedagogy. Practice of truth, non-violence, use of Khadi etc. has been inculcated in the syllabus. The department's syllabi are rural centric and inclusive, making courses more practical and outcome oriented. The department has huge alumni based at various formal and informal levels of academics that helps in broadening economic vision with Gandhi's perspectives at its center.

To inculcate deep economic understanding among students' various methods of teaching and learning viz presentations, debates, departmental seminars, expert interactions and related discourses are used alongside the classroom teaching. With significant contributions from Prof. Anil Gupta (IIM, A), Prof. Iyengar (GIDR) and Prof. Rohit Shukla (SPISER) the department of Rural Economics became the first department in the state to introduce Environmental Economics at postgraduate level in mid-1990's. Evaluation is carried out through various direct and indirect evaluation methods for students to drive the best learning outcomes. Owing to the strength of its faculty the department conducts classes in three languages viz. Gujarati, English and Hindi. The NEP has been implemented in the department across program since 2023 and the syllabus for all the programs are drafted accordingly.
