Gujarat Vidyapeeth is an educational institution established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920, nurturing the culture, society and nature of the country and keeping pace with changing technology, promoting democratic values, self-reliance through social service education and man-centred education system. All over the country and in the state of Gujarat, there are many universities that have started studying Professional Social Work (MSW) in Gujarati medium since 1970.

An important contribution of the Gujarat Vidyapeeth and Department of Social Work is the linkage with government departments and NGOs working in the field of social service and development work. The study helps in developing the necessary knowledge, skills and capacity building for students who want to start their own organization to take entrepreneurial steps in the field of social service.

The vision of the Social Work and Rural Development Department:

  • Giving preference in admission to students willing to do social work with rural, backward areas and classes.
  • To develop values, attitudes and skills that sensitize students and prepare them to work for the marginalized people of the society.
  • To develop an understanding of the functions of relief, development, rehabilitation, formation and to prepare for the role of conflict on issues of social justice.
  • To encourage the student to become a better human being through the process of understanding society through self-understanding.
  • Focusing on understanding issues from local to global level and seeking solutions at local level through excellent integration between professional social work knowledge and Gandhian thought.

Features of Social Work and Rural Development Department:

  • Field and practical education is given equal importance along with theoretical education in Department of Social Work and Village Development. Field experiences help students understand society, shape attitudes and develop skills.
  • Constant effort is made by the teachers for quality education among the students. Interacts with the students, accompanies them in their every activity. Field experiences are imparted through simple examples to theoretical learning in the classroom.
  • Fieldwork, camps, educational tours, summer placements, etc., not only as part of the curriculum but also its location, choice of institution, its planning, learning and evaluation methods are done very carefully by the professors.
  • What we should do is more important than what other universities do, is the ideology of Gujarat Vidyapeeth.
  • Students of Social Work and Rural Development Department are known to never shy away from doing any work, never back down, never hesitate to accept challenging roles. And perform their duties well.
  • Every year job placement attempts are made by the department, but most of the students find their preferred job while studying.
  • Students of the department are rendering services in politics from Panchayat level to Central Government Lok Sabha level. Some students are also selected as Class-I Officers in Government Departments at community level and institutions. Some students have also started their own NGOs and are doing exemplary social service work.
  • Many types of research, projects, workshops, seminars and training are conducted in the department. Which greatly benefits the students.
