Social anthropology in Gujarat was started only in Gujarat Vidyapith. The college started from 1947 had sociology and social work subjects as main subjects along with other social sciences. But there was no subject specialization then. Its aim was solely to prepare social workers for the villages, with essential subjects in the curriculum and the importance of training relevant to Gandhian thought and life. Secondly, the students develop an understanding of rural life and the questions related to it. For this purpose an investigation essay of 100 marks should be prepared by the student through direct field work. Thus, exploratory and report writing preparation was given place. The graduate level course ran from 1947 to 1965.
Post graduate course started from 1965. Since 1978 M. Phil. and Ph.D. course started. Due to effective and consistent teaching programmes, the department is attracting large number of students in all its three programmes.
