Gujarat Vidyapith started the Adult Education, Continuing Education, and Extension Department in 1973. Initially, it functioned as part of the Education College. From its inception, Gujarat Vidyapith has been involved in social awareness work. In 1939, Gandhiji remarked, "The illiteracy of the masses is a sin against India. It is shameful." Keeping this in mind, the department initiated work to eradicate illiteracy.
In 1977, the Government of India started continuous education programs to eliminate illiteracy and ensure ongoing education for the literate. The government also allocated an Adult Education Training Research Center to Gujarat Vidyapith.
The department has been involved in training workers related to adult education, providing literature and research, and conducting continuous education programs for newly literate adults. Social awareness programs and vocational skill development programs are also part of the department’s work. In 1986, the UGC allocated the Population Education and Research Center as well.
